Were you aware that peppermint has antibacterial benefits to your teeth and gums? It’s true. Peppermint has been proven to ward off harmful germs and bacteria in the mouth that could lead to decay, infection and gum disease.

Spearmint and peppermint go to work to ward off the harmful effects of gingivitis and actually can work to delay the progression of gum disease. When we say “spearmint and peppermint” though we are not referring to the hard candies or gum. In order to reap the antibacterial benefits of peppermint and/or spearmint you must use the oils of the plant.

The oils of these plants have been shown to reverse the effects of gum disease by reducing inflammation of the gums and preventing tooth decay. The oils of the peppermint and spearmint plant actually work to improve circulation in the gums around the teeth.

This helps to reduce swelling and subsequent bleeding. The decrease of swelling around the teeth makes it easier to keep the teeth clean and bring relief to the patient in the form of reduced discomfort. Additionally, using peppermint oil on a daily basis will help to ward off bad breath and also whiten teeth.

Due to the anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties of these oils they can also be used to alleviate tooth pain.

The most effective way to add peppermint oil to your diet is to add a drop or two to a glass of cold water. Fill your mouth with the mixture and swish around for one minute, then spit.

You can also add a drop of peppermint (or spearmint) oil to your toothpaste before brushing. If you wish to relieve tooth pain by way of peppermint oil simply apply to a cotton ball and then directly to the painful area.
